A lot more driving to get to Yellowstone but there is more to see with all the wildlife for your 11 year old. The southwest is very scenic but hard to see it appealing to young children.
Alternative first trips could be to Yosemite or travel up Hwy 395 with Bodie, Lone Pine, Mono Lake, and lakes and streams for fishing (planted regularly) and more opportunities to stop and camp along the way.
