Let's start with Santa Fe Skies. Yes, a commercial park with all the pros and cons of that type, but well laid out and fabulous sunset views. About 10 miles out from the Plaza, but convenient route to town.
Taos Valley RV just up the road in Taos. These are our favorite two town in New Mexico: Santa Fe and Taos. The parks are just for a nice place to stay.
On the way to Colorado we like Raton Pass RV Park (used to be called, "Cedar Rail") It is a good place to begin adjusting to higher altitude for us Lowlanders.
We have stayed at the "in town" campground at Carlsbad, but this is a clear example of a campground choice being made purely for convenient access to our real reason for the visit. It is surely not a "great campground" but it served its purpose well.
In fact, most of our experience of RV camping in New Mexico fits into this same pattern. The choice is made based on the area we want to visit, not on the campground as destination.
Chama is another place we like to visit and there are several choices of campgrounds there.
