Interesting how folks decide upon something---anything---like a vacation spot, truck, motor home, or anything else---then have one of two possible negative reactions: either its the best thing in the world or there's nothing worse. Usually, it's the former.
But I always wonder what motivates them to put down anyone with the opposite opinion. After all, "different strokes for different folks!"
We've wintered in southern California and Arizona for several years now and have enjoyed all the spots we've been. Around Phoenix, there's a lot going on. Being baseball fans, the spring training is nice for us. Lots of state parks close for hiking and peak climbing, etc. The smog and traffic isn't so nice (though often "thrilling").
Southern California (east of the mountains, Borrego Sorings and the like) is scenic and fun, but if you aren't either rich or financially imprudent enough to opt for the Palm Springs area, it is a bit too remote for long term living.
But, weatherwise, they all have seemed pretty much the same (Sonoran desert warmer locations, I mean). They can all be cold, windy, and dusty on occasion. Those are the downsides that "come with the turf", the turf being a warm location.
We finally purchased a park model on a lot in the Fortuna Foothills last winter. It will be a while before I decide whether it was a good move or not, but clearly we thought highly enough of the area to do so. And all that winter traffic and long restaurant waiting lines tells me that quite a few folks clearly think it's a good place to winter.
