Gdetrailer, the only "bad" thing about residential fridge is - too big :)...
Doesn't fit in most trailers (unless you go for really small unit like 4.5 cf), and tempts you to load more food, thus increasing energy draw.
There are tons of residential fridges of all kinds of sizes which CAN easily "fit" a TT, even down to a popup or a TC..
Most any Home Depot or Lowes will have 1.2-2.5 cu ft dorm fridges then there is some 4.4 Cu ft fridges which have a separate fridge and freezer door. Then you start getting into "apartment" size fridges which I have seen as small as 7 cu ft upwards to 14 cu ft.
You do need to do some homework and measurements making sure it will fit through your door.
The only "real" bad thing with a residential fridge is they tend to be a bit deeper than a RV fridge. But if you choose carefully you can find some which may only need a little additional trim to add an inch or so to the depth of the cabinet opening.
In my case the fridge I chose was about a 1 1/2" deeper not including the door, I was rebuilding my TT anyways so I built the new cabinets a little deeper.
After having a RV fridge in our previous TT, I can honestly say that the residential fridge is hands down a major upgrade. Not in size since it replaced a 10 cu ft RV fridge but in operation.
Our first trip out I was worried that it was a mistake but I soon found my fears were unfounded as the residential fridge had no problems hold temps of 34F-36F all day long while traveling.
Our first overnight was successful when I got up in the morning and the fridge was still holding 34F-36F and we still had enough battery to run the furnace overnight (a 30K BTU monster with a10A fan motor) plus no dead battery in the morning..
Retrofitting a home fridge, does involve some thought and planning but it is much less of a problem as many traditional RV fridge folks like to think..
Honestly, if YOU was in my shoes with a run down 25 year old TT which I paid $700 for would you HONESTLY be willing to put $600 into a cooling unit for a very rusty fridge which also had discolored and broken plastic inside? How about a $1800 new RV fridge?
I didn't bother asking around on any forums, just did not make sense at all when I could buy a home fridge for $300..
