I hope I'm not going to regret not painting the piece first. We really thought we were going to get the trailer all closed in that day and were rushing to try and beat yet another the storm. It didn't look nearly as gray laying on the ground as it does up on the trailer. Luckily it's on the side of the trailer that we won't be looking at much. Also it looks much better than a bent up piece with holes in it. When my perfectionism gets the best of me I have to remind myself that the trailer is already in much better condition than it was when we got it and it's "just a trailer for camping" But as all of us RVers know our RV is much more than just a trailer. :)
