ASTC is the current digital over-the-air broadcast system. Set it to that before scanning for channels (assuming there is some setting somewhere). Your television is fine without any converter boxes.
With the digital transmissions, you don't get a fuzzy snowy picture. You either get a sharp (but possibly over-compressed) picture, a picture that jumps and cuts in and out, or nothing at all. It's basically an all-or-nothing deal.
