I'm looking at different types of toilets and found couple of models from Dometic:- Dometic 320: This appear to be popular and it is gravity fed. It is also reasonably cheap. Obviously, uses less water per flush.- Dometic MasterFlush 8700 series with macerator and with flush modes, 0.85g and 0.45g. Obviously, this one allows the holding tank to be placed in other areas if needed. Not cheap.So other than the obvious reason, what other reasons are there to go with one model over the other?I have to admit, not having to dump black tank as often interests me, but from longevity perspective, does the more expensive model offer more? What about potential odor issues? Maintenance issues? Anything else?I'm going to be custom building the RV, so I can choose ANY toilet and I would pay for quality/functionality but definitely not just for the look. If anyone has better alternatives than these, those are welcome too!

Much of that decision depends on how you will be using your RV...

You need to talk to us a little more about how you are going to be using your RV. If it is for back country use, or use outside of the US then deleting the black tank is a definite plus - I would look at a composting toilet.If you are going from campground to campground, stick with standard north american camper technology - black tank directly under the throne.

Low seat or tall? Straight down or off to the side? Smell? More to it than brand. Good luck.

Be careful of the macerator models. We have one in our new coach and it uses more water than the old gravity model we had in the prior coach that wored very well for us for 10 years. Also our new toilet has a float in the black tank and when it senses the tank is 'full'. You get a red LED and NO MORE flushes period!

If my experience with one particular model from one manufacturer represents all then your statement would be correct. But if you read my comments it clearly states that I experienced a problem with one model from one manufacturer and when researching the problem I experienced I found that others have had the same problem . Not quite sure how you see this as a representation that no one builds a quality RV toilet that works well.

Seems the OP is not interested in the oft-suggested composting toilet. That is the apparent solution to his stated needs (not interested in regular dumping, camping in National Parks with no water, etc.). At least a comment on composting would be warranted.

We have a Dometic china bowl toilet that has performed trouble free for the 10 years we have owned our present trailer. Not sure of the model number but it does have the plastic base. We live in our trailer for about 4+ months of the year.

The composting toilets sure do not sound like a solution to me. You still have to get rid of the liquid waste and the the solids also. Then you have to purchase peat moss or some other material to start it up again. Sounds like a lot of trouble to me, rather than using a plain old holding tank and emptying it when necessary.

Luckily Dometic replaced as it was still under warranty so they shipped us a replacement. Did some research and found that it was a common problem with this model. We are not full timers but don't think this would be my choice if we were.

Composting is something you should research...check out Gone With The Wynns...they have a Blog and did a short video on the benefits of composting toilets....

It will be full-timing use, (hopefully) mostly in National Parks with no hookups. This will be strictly within USA and Canada.
