Brake time

so, I had the famous "trailer disconnected "  on my f350 and decided to take a look and see if I could find what was causing it.  so I took a resistance reading at the pig tale and got 1.2 Ohm, so that tells me one brake is not working so under the 5th I go.  on the last brake this is what I see (all the others were drawing 2.9 amps with the emergency breakaway pulled.)

so when I opened up the brake this is what I found, the good thing is just the wires broke, but a whole new brake assembly including the backing plate is only 50 bucks (CDN) so I decided just to replace everything.

unfortunately the new brake assemblies took about 7 days to get here so this is how it sat for a week (wrapped up to keep the dust and rain off it though.

figured while I was at it I would put a new grease seal in and check the Berrings, as I have just been using the ezlube for the last 9 years on this rv.  bearings are in perfect shape.

so after I got it back together hooked it up the multi meter and it was down to 1.0 Ohm, hooked to the truck and still no trailer, so I took apart the plugs in the truck side 7 way and check those, all good,

oh if anyone has a way to "fool" the truck into thinking there is a trailer attached so it will put out full signals to the 7 way please let me know.  I know there is a reason the manufactures incorporated this feature, but it is a PITA for trouble shooting.

still no trailer so I decided to crawl under the 5th to see if maybe the wires were chafing where they go through the axel.  Pulled them out about 8 inches on each side nope look perfect, then I glanced at the crimps on the front axel.

back story here, I had one of those rv's that the hubs were not greased properly from the factory and the dealership didn't redo them so on my first trip both front hubs and drums got replaced under warranty because they almost left me stranded.  I had to limp it 200 miles to get it home.

so as a result of this they crimped the brake wires on and the factory crimps were gone.  bingo, the stupid so called rv techs (not all rv tech's just most) must have used side cutters as crimpers and cut through the plastic.  over the last 9 years corrosion has set in I would guess.  I replaced them with new crimps and heat shrink and boom, 0.9 Ohm.  plugged into the truck and got "trailer connected"
