Cafe Table Upgrade

Since it’s normally just my wife and I when we travel, our dining table was just a bit overkill. With our slides in during travel, the table partially obscured access to the bathroom (if we were in a hurry!) and really was too wide to fit in comfortably between the tabletop and the wall when dining.

We looked online at prefab fold-up tables and nothing really looked nice enough, so we decided to build our own table. That way, we could make it exactly the size we needed and we could match our décor. We didn’t want something that was functional, but ugly.

We went to our local builder surplus store in Denver where we found mountains of potential tabletop material. We decided on a cherry cabinet door with a rectangular recessed area. We chose enough 1” glass tile to cover the recessed area from their leftovers stack –tile that exactly matched our color scheme.

We sanded the door then we stained it to match the current cabinetry and gave it two coats of satin poly.

When that completely cured, we glued the tile to the door’s recessed area and then grouted it. Once that step had completely cured, we poured an epoxy resin over the tile thick enough to bring it to the top of the recessed area.

It turned out like glass! We love it. Now, we can remove it when we’re traveling (or leave it up) and it’s exactly the right size for just us two.

Total cost = $80 (plus, we have quite a bit of the epoxy left over for future projects). Most of the cost was actually the locking pedestal system (pole, floor bracket, table bracket).
  • Thanks for the advice on the heat. We read up on this epoxy before using it and found the same thing. My wife's VERY careful about hot stuff being placed on the table, even on a wood top. Besides, this table is pretty much only big enough for two plates and glasses! :)
  • really nice looking job. I made a table top for my TC about half the size of the org. in order to have more room. Not near a nice as yours but it serves the purpose of making it easier to get in and out of the booth and isle room. Thanks for sharing.
  • It looks so nice, I feel like making one and I'm not even sure where I would use it!
