Can I replace 12v light switches with 110v house switches?

I am sure this has been asked, but I have found little to no info on the internet. Can I replace 12v light switches with 110v house switches?

1. To save money
2. I like the look of a clean, white rocker switch over the kind of ugly little switches you see in many RVs.

I feel like my RV looks beautiful and like a house, but then I have these really ugly (my opinion) light switches that look like they belong in a shed.

I know I "can" switch them... But what is the downfall to doing so? Seems like everybody would if there was no problem with it.

  • Hi,

I'd buy dc rated switches. Size is a problem if going from RV to household.
  • Only concern is amperage. I doubt lighting will present any problem there.
  • There is actually a huge difference in switching ac and dc voltages, so you need to look for a dc rating on the switch.
  • As far as the switch being capable, yes.
But as to physically doing it, I suggest you take the cover plate off one of your household switches. Look at the size of the box it is contained in. I dont think you will find that much space available in your motorhome at all those switch locations.
There are many different types of electrical switches available in many different appearances. Try searching Amazon for some different types that are compact and made for mobile uses, aircraft and marine units immediately come to mind for applications to explore.
