So with all the replies so far most suggest I am going to blow up or fry my alternator...How will this happen I would like to know if anyone has a sound response or data to show why.
So using 50 amps max from my 105 amp alt is going to cook it? Remember I have 50 amp breakers on both ends truck and camper side
What would be the difference if it was raining at night, wipers on and headlights on. 160 watt stereo cranking and ac on cause its hot out...?? How many amps is that?
And since I have an old truck I dont have heated seats, navigation system... etc.. and such...
Thats done all the time sitting in traffic say from an accident on a highway or rush hour standstills..
Ever wait for the wife outside with truck running while she shops with above scenario and all accessories on?
Just trying to be realistic here is all.
If I wanted to lug a noisey gen and power a portable charger I would have bought one. Or I would have upgraded my convertor that outputs 13.6 volts and power that with a noisy gen. And since I am in forests solar will not work.
So with that said I have a chevy and do all my own repairs on my cars. Infact I never been to the dealer for any repair work...
Anyways I will get amp readings this weekend. And if I blow up my alt I will be the first to tell you.. Also I will het temp readings from the alt as I have a laser thermometer.. I will get hydrometer readings too..
Sorry that you don't like "sage advice" that doesn't match your expectations.
As far as "noisy" gens goes.. I can tell you this, even open frame gens like a Champion ARE QUIETER than pretty much ANY vehicle engine..
I HAVE tested my 4Kw China import gen and several completely UNMODIFIED pickup trucks WITH GAS ENGINES and the 4Kw GEN was easily 10DB LESS than the pickup trucks idling..
A small 1000W Honda inverter gen IS considerably "quieter" than my 4Kw gen not to mention less than half the weight of my 4Kw gen (under 50lbs for the Honda inverter and 110 lbs for my 4Kw gen)..
To me I WOULD rather put the wear and tear on a gen that costs $800 instead of a vehicle which at a min would cost $50,000 and up..
False economy on your part..
Not to mention unless you are DEEPLY shaded solar panels can still provide some charging benefits..
As far as repairing vehicles... well I rarely turn mine over to a dealer or mechanic.. Only in cases where I deem that they SHOULD be able to fix the problem faster or I DON'T have the time to do it myself..
Great for you that you are able to completely wrench EVERY part of your vehicle.. You may need to use your "MacGiver" like skills in order to pluck yourself out of the woods some day when your vehicle fails to operate and you have no parts to fix it in the woods..
Being deep in the woods would give me even more pause to think twice when using up your vehicles life endlessly idling to charge RV batteries..
I wish you good luck..
