LED's do not like over voltage which equals over current which equals burning out. I have AGM batteries which you do not equalize by charging at 16+ volts. My leds are usually off when traveling so the 14V from the alternator is not a problem. I've had 30+ leds from China for 3+ years and only one has stopped working... not sure why. The led strip I use the most is under the sink in the bathroom where I use it as a night light for 12 hours over three months X 2 winters = 2000+ hours... still going strong.
Will a voltage regulator protect your LEDs... sure. Is over voltage a problem in a MH... maybe. Most of my LEDs will never see 2000 hours use or over 14V and usually just 12.8.
