The bottom of my door has metal that meets at a 90 degree angle at the bottom on both lower sides. My dog gets in a hurry and wants to run in as soon as you open the door. I'm thinking that we're going to get a vet bill when she slices her head open on the door. I'm thinking of adding a piece of plastic to the bottom of the outside door that is rounded and sticks down below the level of the dangerous part but that still will not fix the screen. Any ideas (other than training the dog).It looks like this one:

I'm having a hard time visualizing the problem area but if it is a "sharp" metal edge you are trying to protect your dogs head from, you could do multiple coats of painted on Plasti-Dip.

Sounds like training the dog to wait for you would be the cheapest (and safest) solution. It's a dominance thing. She thinks she's the leader of your pack. The only drawback we found when we trained Ollie about who gets to go out the door first (or in) is that now he won't go out unless we go out first. LOL! It only took about three days after we adopted him for him to get the idea.

If I'm reading you right you are talking about the bottom aft corner of the door being a sharp point that your dog (like mine) wants to scoot under/around to get in the door as soon as it's cracked open.Well I don't have a good idea other than to say that our dog has learned to duck pretty good, and hasn't had a problem yet. Maybe some of that automotive door edging (the stuff to keep your door from making dings in the neighbors car), that wraps around the edge of car doors would be small enough to fit on the door without causing too much interference and then it would have a thin plastic cover. It's where they miter the corners together and it comes to a very sharp point. The metals only about a 1/16" thick so it makes a good weapon for the dogs back and head it she hits it.

Thanks. It looks like the manufacturer would realize the danger and come up with a better design. If the door was opened into a child's head it would do some damage too.

Putting a leash on the dog before opening the door gives immediate positive control.

It can be very difficult to train a dog not to do something that comes naturally.

Maybe a flap of rubber on the outside of the door, extending an inch below the door.

It sure sounds like the dog is the master in this household. Too bad, a well trained dog is a pleasure to see. I do believe some training needs to be done on both ends of the leash.

Duct tape? Not pretty, but it is soft and cheap.

I found that I was frequently nicking my skin on various sharp places throughout my trailer -- so I put a 120 grit pad on my random orbital sander and went around looking for those darn corners. Problem solved.

Just because you expected the answers and they may not be welcome, does not make them any less correct. Finish the training. When we go to the door the dogs get excited. All dogs do. The first thing we taught the dogs, pertinent to this, was we go in and out first, unless we tell them to go and that is in only, never out. You won't like my next statement either. We do not walk our dogs in public, unless on a leash. Ours will heal, also, but the law and the fact that others don't know our dogs mandates that. There is more here but I will stop there.

Don't most camp grounds require that pets be leashed when outside?

Seriously, this is an assumed problem that could be fixed in less than a day of training.
