Door guard ideas needed

The bottom of my door has metal that meets at a 90 degree angle at the bottom on both lower sides. My dog gets in a hurry and wants to run in as soon as you open the door. I'm thinking that we're going to get a vet bill when she slices her head open on the door. I'm thinking of adding a piece of plastic to the bottom of the outside door that is rounded and sticks down below the level of the dangerous part but that still will not fix the screen. Any ideas (other than training the dog).

It looks like this one:

  • Why is training the dog not a good idea for many reasons. Cesar Millan where are you?
  • I purchased clear round corner protectors which I glued to the front TV cabinet to protect my head. This might work on the door, if you trim it and use an auto adhesive. However: TRAIN THE DOG. We lost our dog and good friend in Salt Lake City when fireworks went off and the little dog bolted out the door, down the roadway, to be hit by numerous cars and trucks on the busy highway.
Train the dog to "stay", "wait", "OK go/come".
  • I used something like THIS on all sharp corners in the house to protect the WEE ones from falling and splitting a lip or their head.

Might work for the fuzzy kid.:B
  • Train you dog to wait until you say go. Ours will not come out the door untill momma puts his lead on. Make him wait umtill you get the door open, and then tell him to get in. There are a lot of other solutions, but training is the best.

Sounds like training the dog to wait for you would be the cheapest (and safest) solution. It's a dominance thing. She thinks she's the leader of your pack. The only drawback we found when we trained Ollie about who gets to go out the door first (or in) is that now he won't go out unless we go out first. LOL! It only took about three days after we adopted him for him to get the idea.

She's eight months old and the dog walks with me in Homedepot without a leash, always on my right side and never even sniffs anyone in the store unless I tell her it's ok.

I just want to prevent any injury. Kind of like putting those plastic things in your outlets so your kid doesn't stick a fork in there. You can train the kid not to but when your not looking,,, who knows. The door could even blow closed on her as she jumped up.

I'm having a hard time visualizing the problem area but if it is a "sharp" metal edge you are trying to protect your dogs head from, you could do multiple coats of painted on Plasti-Dip.

It's on the lower corner of the door and the screen door. It's where they miter the corners together and it comes to a very sharp point. The metals only about a 1/16" thick so it makes a good weapon for the dogs back and head it she hits it.

If I'm reading you right you are talking about the bottom aft corner of the door being a sharp point that your dog (like mine) wants to scoot under/around to get in the door as soon as it's cracked open.
Well I don't have a good idea other than to say that our dog has learned to duck pretty good, and hasn't had a problem yet.
Maybe some of that automotive door edging (the stuff to keep your door from making dings in the neighbors car), that wraps around the edge of car doors would be small enough to fit on the door without causing too much interference and then it would have a thin plastic cover. Might be too thick though.

Thanks, that's interesting. I'll check my local Autozone. I bet they have something close.
