Extra wide trim molding?

Hi All!

I'm tackling my first RV remodel with a 1983 22' Komfort Kamper. Been a really fun project!

I'm planning on using extra wide trim for the corners, roof and bottom rail. I'm hoping to figure something out that will cover 2 inches along edges. The top of the roof doesn't need to be 2", but the visible wall edge does need to be. The same goes for the bottom rails. But I would like the corners to cover 2" on both edges.

I've been searching conventional RV trim and haven't found anything. I figure I might be able to use standard house flashing for the roof and bottom rail, but the front and back corners present challenges finding anything other than trim specifically designed for RVs. And searching RV trim I'm not finding anything that wide.

Any thoughts on where I might find RV trim this wide? Or other creative options?

Thanks in advance!
Robert
  • Seems the biggest consideration is bending it around the front and back corners. No doubt aluminum fascia trim will work along straight lines and angled corners. By challenging to bend and still keep it looking nice.

Perhaps a metal fabrication shop could bend it?
  • Making fiberglass components in a mold isn't super difficult, though it is time-consuming and a little messy and can get a bit expensive. There are plenty of videos etc. available. The usual approach for something like this would be to form an outside mold with whatever sort of materials you can readily work with (wood, silicone, or whatever), painting in some gelcoat, and then adding layers of bits of fiberglass cloth or matting with your resin of choice such as expoxy or polyester. (The parts can also be built from the inside out, but from my limited understanding it's harder to get a nice finish that way.)

Fiberglass or similar techniques are used for many things other than RVs; there are some good tutorials to be seen aimed at e.g. cosplay aficionados or boatbuilders.

House trim parts are not a terrible option, as you already suggested. Sometimes it helps me just to wander through a store and see what's available. Perhaps a piece of vinyl or metal guttering could be trimmed lengthwise somehow to work? Or maybe an aluminum angle extrusion?
  • Not sure exactly what you need, but you might look at aluminum seamless gutter installers. They make gutter to any length, by using roll stock and a forming machine. They might be able to form the trim you need in whatever lengths you need.
