Generator Muffler Mods

is your generator a portable or mounted in a RV?
Modifying the muffler will help with the noise but, a lot of the noise is generated my the mechanical movement of the generator.

If it's a portable unit you can build a QUIET BOX. Check Youtube for ideas, there are several.

A lot of noise is also the intake air.

There's YouTuber videos of guys welding truck mufflers to open frame generators and claiming dramatic reduction in noise. I remain skeptical.

If you're somewhere with soft soil, dig a foxhole for the generator. Let the earth soak up that sound.

Just remember anything you do to quiet it that creates back pressure will ruin your gen.

Much of the noise is from the engine itself. Adding restrictive exhaust will do little and may cause great harm.

or get a inverter type (Honda) muffler and have it welded to gen-set exhaust pipe.

some notions never change..

most cars.. catalytic converter, muffler, resonators.. and still make more power then ever in history.

If it was possible to quiet a cheap open frame genny, pricey inverters would not be so popular.

I have a typical 5000 watt open frame construction generator that I use at home for emergency power. I fitted an exhaust pipe to it that is routed to the outside of our 2 car garage where the generator is used. With the exhaust going outside, it is unreal how loud the mechanical sound from the generator is inside the garage, as others have mentioned. I don't think a muffler will do that much to reduce the noise. With the generator exhaust going outside, I can now at least mostly close the garage doors so the neighbors don't hear as much noise.

Your Generac Wheelhouse 5500 open frame generator is totally unsuitable for use in any organized campground and no amount of modification is going to make it so. Your best solution is to replace it with a significantly quieter inverter style genset, sizes of which range from ~ 1000 to ~ 7000 watts.
