has anyone attempted to make their own sofa?

I was thinking of doing the same thing. Remove Jack knife, add 2x2 framing. My water tank is under the trailer floor, so it will still be all storage. Will be putting removable plywood like the dinette seats and a strip of plywood secured at the back of the bench portion all the way to the wall for a base for the back which will also include special storage. It will have a flip down plywood panel and hidden latched for rifle, shotgun and ammo storage. Maybe some shelves for small items or extra canned goods or other food items. Was thinking about adding a futon mattress for the cushions (you can custom order them to the size you need) or get an upholstery shop make some cushions.

I did draw up a plan for a fold out sofa for a mini camper I am going to build using an enclosed utility trailer I have not yet purchased. It will use a twin size futon mattress. Daytime & evening sofa / night time fold out bed.

Grab an old couch and use the springs from it. If the foam is still good, reuse that also.

Also note the angle of the back and the seat from the old couch and use that information when you build your new couch.

I am actually doing a sofa and love seat right now . I have the mockup in the garage and we keep sitting on it and adjusting the dimensions to what feels best.

When they are done, we will spend about $400 for both pieces and have more storage, flat and comfortable beds, less weight, and easily replaceable upholstery if one gets damaged.

There are also foam stores online which sell foam and cushions of different densities. If you google foam wedge bolster, you will see some things you can use as a backrest.

You can get some memory foam mattress toppers and cut them up to the right sizes. Check that price against upholstery grade foam, they may or may not be cheaper. Do get a good high density foam, regardless.

As someone said, slant the seat a little bit but not too much. Take a good look at a sofa or chair you like and use those dimensions for a guideline.

I made a much better jack-knife sofa about 20 years ago and it was easy. I found a foam vendor and had some really high quality cushions made - two layers/double density. The wife made the covers. Craig

Check Joann Fabrics or another Fabric store they have foam in different sizes for your cushions. Its fairly easy to cut u can use a serrated knife or we used a electric knife.
