I came up with a great solution for our twisty-turning 9 year old. We had a bed rail when she was younger, but she doesn't want to use it now because it is FOR A BABY.
I got an old swim noodle and put it under the mattress right up against the lip to hold the mattress in. In order for her to fall out, she has to roll UPHILL!! It has worked great for the 100+ nights we spent in our 5'er this year. Cheap and readily available (you may already have one) and can be removed easily and quickly and can even be used in the pool during the day. Just be sure to dry it!
In order for her to get out of bed, she has to consciously move up to the end and swing her leg over and hop down. I got up on the bunk and tried to get out when I got the idea. I almost had to yell for help from the DH.
