I'm not sure I understand #1.
If I keep the existing 12v system intact including a battery I'm not concerned with loosing the DC-DC converter. Do I need to be concerned with this? Not sure.
Someone on one of these forums is charging his 12v system off his 48v system with an MPPT solar controller. He has the solar input of his solar controller connected to his 48v battery bank and the battery side connected to the 12v battery. He is running off the 48v system essentially and his cheepo walmart RV battery stays pretty healthy as it's never discharged. Seems like a pretty cool way of doing this and if the solar controller dies he can run off the battery and manually charge it with a standard charger as needed till he can replace the controller.
I suppose another option would be a battery tender but could it keep up with a furnace fan or vent fan and water pump?
