I got to thinking about this idea and I'd like people's input about it.Would it be better to spend probably 3-4 thousand dollars on a camper like a ScamporPut my shed ( 8.5 ft x 12 ft)onto a carry on trailer?I talked to my neighbor about it. He's willing to help me build the deck and do the electrical work.So I would only be out of pocket very little.This would make more room for my pets.8.5 ft wide is the maximum width allowed. I don't want to be pulled over because an officer thought I was over. I would get the reflective white/red sticker to go across my trailer and mark the tape in case of this.Thoughts?

This is one of those ideas that sound like it may save a bunch of money but will be less than optimal, if proceeded on. First, you lose the use of the shed on your property unless you're willing to unload it every time you're home or will have to climb up into it when using for storage. Both situations will have you looking somewhere else for storage.Second, have you considered the weight of the shed? I used to build and sell yard sheds and maneuvering an 8 x 12 onto a flat bed and delivering put that endeavor out of business. I would guess, with conventional building materials, they weigh in excess of 5000 lbs. The four squares of roofing material weigh about 1000 lbs. Third, shed versus RV trailer on the road, your shed may not like the high wind speed of travelling. Fourth, do you plan to outfit this shed with any of the usual RV stuff like water, electrical, appliances, bed, cabinets, etc.? I think you'd find that putting in even half of that will make your costs greater than buying a used RV. I'd suggest that you buy an RV and leave the shed on your property.

westend said it all. Buy a used RV and do some repairs/modifications.Using a lawn shed as a RV will give you problems.However, it is an interesting thought and, I give you credit for being innovative and thrifty. I don't think it's practical.

They cant seem to give away older travel trailers around here...get one of those and fix it up

Also, how many decent RV parks will let you park the thling?

I say, find an older RV trailer and fix it up. You will have all the comforts of home and be more accepted in campgrounds.

I was at a friends place last weekend and he had just bought a travel trailer for $1500. It was about 24' from 1984. The outside looked faded, but the interior looked new. Like someone bought it and never used it. Those deals are out there. Look around.

That's not bad if you used it for 2 years then got your money back out of it!

Also agree with Westend on the shed idea, that's a non-starter for all the reasons mentioned.

I took a 8.5 x 24 enclosed cargo trailer and converted mine into a camper. I purchased a brand new 13.5K AC unit and installed it. I purchased a used 18' awning and attached it. I bought a 10 gallon water tank and installed it on the tongue, used RV water lines and fitting along with an RV water pump. Installed RV lighting within the unit and outside the unit, the clear one up front and the amber one next to the door. I even used RV switchs inside the unit. I ran electrical and cable inside and out. The sink came from Habitat for Humanity store and the cabinets came from Lowes along with the counter top. After all was installed with a breaker box so that the AC was on a seperate breaker we used a 30 amp plug from a damaged camper and installed it. We then installed RV windows, insulated the unit and then sheeted the inside with a nice 1/8" sheeting from Lowes.

The trailer was built and designed 6" taller so as to not hit our head inside and gave us enough room to place awning over the door. We used a porta potti for nights. This carried all of our gear and then we removed all the gear once we arrived and we then had an open floor plan. It worked for us for almost 2 years. The only draw back was we were starting to notice that some campgrounds did not allow "box / cargo" trailer in their campground.

Cost - Trailer was 5K
Installed items around $2300 with my labor and a friends.

Sold it for $7500. Sorry no photo's available right now.

Thank you! I'm still in the gotta think of everything stage. I wanted something a little bigger since I will be living in it full time and I wanted to give my animals enough room to be comfortable.
