light bulb to keep fridge warm?

Can anyone who has used a light bulb to keep their fridge warm in the winter (while operating) answer some questions for me?

I understand the basic concept, the incandescent bulb puts off a little heat to keep the ammonia tank warm and presumably, liquid? while operating in very cold temperatures.

where does the bulb go, exactly? is it on all the time? what wattage works best? can you share some pictures of the setup?

  • Hi Gordon,

I use a light bulb. In my case I have it on a thermocube so it will cut in automatically. It will soon be time to restrict the air flow to the 'chimney' by blocking off the upper two vents.

If you wish to know exactly where heat needs to be applied go to the winter camping thread under full time. There are pictures of the Norcold cold weather "kit" and where it should be installed.

As I now have the ARP over heating device in place I may be able to take some measurements of the actual temperatures. Typically out of the boiler the maximum I'm seeing is 184 C. I've not looked at the numbers for the fan sensor, but I suppose I should to help establish a base line.
