If you are thinking of the same picture I am then that was a incandescent bulb that did that damage to a truck camper. Some one had posted it in a LED thread and another poster corrected it. I know I freaked out when I saw it too.
I've had both the types of LED that I bought on for 4+ hours at a time and they never got more than warm to the touch at the lens. I had a incandescent on for 30 minutes and even at the lens, it was hot enough that had I kept my hand there, it would have burnt me.
I also haven't had the double stick tape fail (yet) but I never run the lights while charging the battery so the LEDs never see the high voltages the converter puts out.
