Real ignorant question here! Several folks commented about the heat from the LED. Are they really that hot? I don't boondock and only rarely use lights without being plugged in power, so power usage isn't big concern. I was considering switching to LED to cut down on heat from original lamps. The one over the bed gets so hot, it almost burns my head if I try to read in bed more than 2-3 minutes. One over sofa is slightly further away, but does get hot shining on head and shoulders for long. So are the LEDs lots cooler? Are they worth the cost to reduce heat?
The LEDs we are using are a lot cooler than the original bulbs. Even after running them a while they only become warm and and be handled. The original bulbs in my TT will heat up the lens to the point that it could cause a burn if left there and touching the bulb would sizzle my fingers.
Since you will be plugged in most of the time the converter may be charging your system while you use the lights. At higher voltages unregulated LEDs will produce more heat but still no where near the temps the original incandescent bulbs do. Still it can be enough heat to cause the imitation 3M tape to release on the panels. That doesn't take much as others have posted that just having the RV sitting in storage during the summer heat can cause the tape to give too.
The work around would be to use cob style bulbs or buy the more expensive regulated LEDs that stay at 12v all the time.
Either way the LEDs will produce much less heat.
