"Galley base" means bottom of the dinette? Is it easier to get to from the outside reaching in than from the inside bending down? Consider patching it and painting the back of the dinette with magnetic paint or chalkboard paint. If you have little kids or grand kids, they would love the chalkboard paint and the magnetic paint would allow you to decorate the back of the bench with magnets from places you travel or other fun stuff.
