Consider patching it and painting the back of the dinette with magnetic paint or chalkboard paint. If you have little kids or grand kids, they would love the chalkboard paint and the magnetic paint would allow you to decorate the back of the bench with magnets from places you travel or other fun stuff.

A pic would have helped...by galley base I mean the side of the cabinet under the galley sink. And yes it's definitely easier to reach from outside than inside bending down. Too low for key rack...that's already on the upper cabinet. Kids might like magnetic or chalkboard paint.
