My 6V batteries get the water topped off once a year whether they need it or not. Generally it's closer to the "not" side of things, a few tablespoons or maybe an eighth of an inch per cell. Granted, that's with a PD converter that does a good job of not causing excessive loss by electrolysis (or "boiling," though it's not boiling in the physical sense).
I have not done so, as I don't see any need with my setup, but floating a little bit of mineral oil on top of the electrolyte will cut losses due to evaporation quite a bit (but not due to electrolysis).
