New flooring...how?

I have lino down and want to lay in some of that neat vinyl self-adhesive planking. Can I lay that onto top of the lino or must I remove it first? And if I need to remove the lino...how do I get it from under the cupboards and walls?

Many thanks..

  • I wouldn't put stick tiles on vinyl floor. They won't stay put.
As for cabinets et all cut around them.
  • I have used floating vinyl planking over old vinyl in s&b in two areas with good results. Like others have said be sure to leave a gap.
If you have small imperfections they can be cut out and filled with floor leveler.

I a cold climate floating might be better than the adhesive type.
  • Check the clearance. Make sure you can still move the slide in and out if you lay the new stuff over the old.
  • If your sticking it down you have to make sure the old floor is not loose or have any bubbles first. Clean with some alcohol, Trim new floor to cabinets or walls and use a small piece of quarter round trim if needed.
  • Wayne is talking about sticky-backed strip flooring so it doesn't float.
Wayne, check instructions but I believe some of it has adhesive meant to go right over existing vinyl.
Just trim around cabinets and such.
Then, and this is the important part, make sure you post pics of your work here. ;)
  • The new flooring is likely a floating floor so nothing is glued to the old floor. If the current flooring is in perfect condition I would speculate that you can simply lay the new flooring over the old. If you do remove the old flooring, you just cut right up to the edge of the cabinets and walls and remove it. The new flooring needs a small gap around all edges for expansion and that will be covered by some molding.
