Onan to Honda generator.

On my toyhauler, I have a Onan 4000 generator. Its a nice generator and plenty powerful. However, it's noisy and it really likes fuel.
Sitting in my garage and doing virtually nothing but take up space, I have Honda EU3000I. generator. I really like this generator. It's quiet, sips the fuel and pretty compact. Now for the question.
Can I swap out the Onan for the Honda? What would be the ramifications here. I know that exhaust would have to be dealt with.
Has anybody done this?
Thanks...I look forward to reading your responses.
  • Would think if you take out the Onan, you could just put the Honda in the empty bay which should be big enough to store and hold it.

I don't know how much the Honda weighs, but you might be able to take it out and set it away from your unit when you're at camp. You'd have a lot less noise and no vibration at all.
  • I don't see a problem, assuming your Honda will fit in the same space as your Onan.
I would need a licensed electrician to hook everything up. What I like about my Onan is the remote start. Noise is the downside.
  • Thank you gentlemen for your responses. I kind of figured that too. Didn't know about the Honda built ins and will check them out but to trade out one and buy another with the same issues seems dumb and expensive. I also own a Honda EU 2000 which I use most of the time for basic electric use. If I need the 'big dog' to run the micro or the AC, then I fire up the Onan.

What he said. But, to add onto that, the built in Honda's are not going to be much (or any) quieter than your Onan, and will be just as thirsty. At least mine is.
