I use 1/8-inch Hardware cloth in all openings, on all of my TCs. It is typically available at hardware stores, sold by the running foot (about $3). The 1/8" mesh is the same size as store bought screens. I have hot glued, duct taped, riveted, and used screws to install it.
The 1/8-inch mesh does not restrict air flow as much as screen. I usually have to purchase the mesh for the furnace, due to the shape of the exhaust.
Typically, I install the hardware cloth every place wasp and other critters can get in; Fridge door, fridge top vent, propane vent, stove vent, and water heater vent.
If wasp or mud dauber build nest in your furnace, you have a real potential for a fire. You have to pull the furnace and disassemble to remove their nest.
