Depends on the fabric, in my opinion. If it's vinyl or some other material that's designed to "resist" staining, water, and/or penetration of any kind I doubt paint or dye will adhere properly.
It might look fine when you first lay the paint on, but I'm thinkin' that the first time you roll the awning up, the paint film will roll off with it.
