The trick is going to be getting the adapter off of the black tank. In my case I had water damage in the bathroom and ended up replacing part of the floor. The toilet was on the part of the floor that I did not have to replace but the adapter was both screwed into the floor and glued to the top of the tank. I think that it would be fairly tricky to get the adapter off the tank and leave enough to get a new adapter back on the tank.
I also agree w/ JaxDad that you need to fix any underlying problems...
