When I had my Ranger pickup, I fabricated a shelf that fit into a groove in the cab and was really handy to have stuff at hand back there. I kept things under the shelf like the ice chest and a box of kleenex and coats water jug up on the shelf. I hid a lot of stuff from view and was as I said handy to keep things up where you could reach them.
When I bought a 1997 F150 beater truck, I made cardboard patterns for a shelf but I ended up giving the DGS the truck before I got it built.
I'm currently looking for a replacement for the F150 and will probably get a 2X4 Ranger so I can get rid of the 1995 Sidekick towed that is on it's last legs. I will definitely build a shelf for that truck.
