Small solar panel for roof vent??????

Has anyone installed a small solar panel for a roof vent? My roof vent fan draws 1.2 amps, and I have two roof vents. Getting them off house batteries would save nearly 3 amps. I'm estimating I'd need a 50w 12v panel to run both..?.

Anything I need to do to protect the fan motors from too much current ???

Thanks

  • Home Depot has a 50 watt panel for $65. Couldn't post a link because it has a percent sign in it.
I would think a charge controller would be optional.

  • I already have 280w of solar and two Group 31 12v AGM batteries. I'm just looking for a way to take more load off the house system as I can't add any more batteries or another 140w panel.

I usually never use the fan at night. Only doring the day to moderate the temperature.

Just thinking a little outside the box....

Then what's the point? Wouldn't you want to be able to use these vent fans anytime, day or night? :h
  • You might be able to get something LIKE THESE SOLAR POWERED FANS and modify it. Of course your fan wouldn't run at night if the power is supplied directly from the solar panel.

I think you would be better off getting a small solar panel and using it to charge your batteries.
  • This is exactly what I have on my house. Works when the sun is out and stops at night. There is no battery involved with the unit on my house. M just wondering if I'll need some type of current or voyage regulation.
  • Normally any solar panel system would feed a battery (or batteries) via a charge controller which in turn powers the load(s) but it sounds like you're expecting to power these vents directly from the panels? :h If so, doesn't sound to me like an effective plan. :(
