Yes a bolt can be used as a buss.

Cell failure is not a reason to avoid six volt jars.

If heavy inverter use (2000 watts and up) is planned on then twelve volt jars may have an "edge".

My favorite battery is two volts--but I can't afford the modifications that would be required.

Again what truly counts is total capacity. More is better.

Add some solar and you can have a mean lean boondocking machine.

As fAR as the 6v setup, I'm not too keen on that for various reasons, the most obvious being if a batt goes bad in the middle of your trip well that puts a damper on things.

Yes they do. You are connecting them in parallel which provides the 12v source. I typically get 4 to 5 years out of the Golf Cart Batteries.

I just got back from our first boondocking trip with a pair of Costco 6V's.
They worked great. Between the batteries and 160W of portable solar, I can probably go for weeks at a time. (in warm weather of course)

I considered 3 12v batteries, but couldn't justify the modifications on the tongue or the price of comparable batteries. It is easier to find a true 6v deep cycle than to find a true 12v deep cycle. Most of your 12v at big box stores are marine hybrids.

Pairs of 6V will charge just like 12V batteries. You may need to modify your battery cables depending on how long they are. I didn't have to modify mine. If you only have 1 battery currently, you will need an additional battery cable to link the 2 batteries.

I just came back from wallyworld and was a little puzzled. The 24 size batteries were 99.99 and the larger 27 batteries were 79.99. Both marine/rv of course the only thing I saw different between the two is that the 24 size was listed as "premium". Kinda sounds like marketing crap. Just wondering if anyone knows what I mean.

No, it really isn't.

The same argument could be applied to any 12v battery. What if someone dry camps with one 12v battery? We don't we advise him/her to carry a spare? 2-6v batteries in series are nothing more than a 12v battery in two pieces, and it's no more likely to catastrophically fail than a 12v battery.

Having one battery fail is possible, yes, but probable? Hardly.

Regarding the two 6VDC GC2 batteries connected in series verses a single 12VDC battery. You have to think of the two 6VDC batteries as one large 12VDC battery. True if one of the 6VDC batteries fail then you are out of luck. This really would be a rare event however. Have you ever lost your single 12VDC battery when camping. I havent...

The bigger deal is the two 6VDC GC2 batteries will give you around 220AH capacity which will produce 12VDC @ 25AMPs DC current for a good 400 minutes 6HRS). The golf cart batteries have massive battery cores inside. The cost is only going to be around $180 dollars. This is a pretty low cost to consider.


You can get a couple of 12VDC 110AH battery in parallel but the GP24-GP27 models you readily find at the local stores will only produce 12VDC@25 AMPS in about half the time the GC2 Golf Cart battery will produce the same power. Check the TROJAN PRODUCT SPECIFICATION PDF to see how the different batteries perform.

Since we camp alot off the power grid I too am sort of reluctant to only have a couple of 6VDC batteries connected in series. I probably would always have two groups of two 6VDC batteries on hand to always have a PLAN B.
