Many, many, years ago I was in 4-H and wood working. Did a cutting board, made from red elm. Cut the board out and sanded until smooth, all by hand, no power tools. We, there were maybe 4 of us doing the same project, then heated them in an oven until they were warm enough to allow us to allow us to rub paraffin into the wood.
My wife still uses that cutting board today.
And we also learned to never to use walnut lumber to make a cutting board because walnut can taint some foods.
