Top ten RV improvements

I love to tinker and improve, so I got to thinking about a list of which changes were best. I'm not talking about replacing tires, batteries, or any other repairs or maintenance. Just improvements and how useful they have been to me. This is my top ten list for our Trail Lite B+ MH.

10. Oxygenics shower head: Decent help for using less water. Debatable.

9. Samlex inverter, pure sine wave, 150w with cig plug. Runs our low-draw Vizio TV, even including DISH receiver if need be. Recharges all our goodies. Also, I added a cig outlet by the TV, to power the inverter, because there was none.

8. Ultra Gauge (like a Scan Gauge). Fun to have but not essential. Gives MPG, RPMs (I have no tach), dozens of other gauges and reports, reads and clears codes, etc.

7. Hopkins rv levels on dash and inside drivers door. This is a set of two small curved levels with graduated marks. Read the numbers, try to find a level spot. If not, get out the lego blocks, pretty simple, and very useful.

6. Led lights in the house. From ebay. Use practically no juice.

5. Vizio tv, looks great, uses very little juice when on 12v.

4. Hunter digital thermostat. Comfy!

3. Removed jacknife sofa and replaced with built in "twin" bed. Not for everyone. But worked for us in a big way.

2. Bath door holder/ Cipa wide angle window lens. Made a small fixutre to hold the (rear) bath door open, allowing the driver to see the rear window from the inside mirror. Put a wide angle lens on the window, now it's like having a rear view camera. Very useful.

And finally, the number 1 improvement:
Extend-a-shower. I've put these on our last three RVs. They make a tight shower roomy.

  • On our tt and tv:
    10. Installed a truck bed cargo slide tray for easy access to the entire bed.
    9. Installed a winch on the front of the truck.
    8. Cut a hole to access the HWH bypass.
    7. Added a 12v outlet near the tv.
    6. Added a 12v near the rear window for our signal booster and antenna (and whatever else may be needed).
    5. added a fantastic fan to the bedroom.
    4. added vent covers to all skylights/vents.
    3. added storage bins and shelf expandable racks to multiply/improve kitchen cabinet storage.
    2. swapped out one of the rear rocker chairs for a storage bench. Stores all shoes plus makes a great window seat.
    1. Had dealer add a ladder to access roof. Great view from up there!

    Still to do:
    New shower head
    Finish converting to LED lights
swap the mattress for the one at home
find a better rocker/recliner for rear seating
    add solar and inverter
    swap to 6v batteries
    add bike rack

We are hoping with these last changes we will be ready to fulltime!

These are the ones I wouldn't do without.

Ultra Trik-L-Start to keep the chassis battery charged

2 gallon accumulator tank to stop pump pulsating during showers/hand washing and also so we can flush during the night without having to activate the pump.

Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C (also comes in 50 amp) to protect the electronics in the RV. It has already saved us from an open ground once, and low voltage more than once.

Flojet Macerator for dumping at home. (Cleanout plug is 70 feet away.)
  • - Solar
    - Changing from 12v to 6v GC batteries
    - PSW Inverter
    - Macerator
    - LED's
    - Internal fridge fan
    - AFFF and Halon Extinguishers
    - LCD TV's
    - Oxygenics ! :)

Each TT/RV "need for improvements" is different.

    For my 2006 Jayco TT:

    - Installed Extra 12V computer large size fan behind fridge to keep it cooler during extreme hot days. Great upgrade.
    - Re-routed its PEX piping to allow easy bi-pass (for winterization tasks).
    - Installed RV Surge Protection. Better than factory.
    - Installed better / quieter fan in bathroom. Better than factory.
    - Installed large access hole (with removable panel) to view rear of hot water tank (for yearly inspections). This large access hole (and removable panel) should be factory build.
    - Installed 12V manual battery switch on trailer tongue. Better than factory.
    - Upgraded to STAR brake wiring using thicker 10 gauge wiring instead of default linear brake wiring. Better than factory.
    - Removed 11 of its windows, removed its inner lip foam (that always leaks in time) and re-sealed each winter - the proper "old school" way. Better than factory.
    - Installed Roof vent covers (black over bedroom area and white over bathroom).
    - Tinted windows on the kid's bedroom - to allow them to sleep in longer.
    - Installed longer master bed base to allow longer normal house queen mattress (instead of factory RV short queen bed).
    - Installed 12V safety lighting on its stairs. IMO, this should be minimum factory.
    - Installed galvanized wire mesh around Hot Water tank. Thus, stopping "stuff" within same storage compartment from hitting / laying against the rear of HW tank, and eliminate the risk of fire. This should be factory build.
    - Installed 12V light within TV cavity cabinet area. Now, we can see the TV's control buttons without turning on a ceiling light.
    - Installed 110/120 Volt meter (bought from ebay) to view available volts (to decide to turn AC unit ON or OFF).
    - Installed 12V fan (with manual switch) on roof vent to "suck" the bad smell out of the black tank. No more stank smells within our small bathroom. And, no need for chemicals either. IMO, this should be minimum factory build.

These are just a few mods to my Jayco.
  • Sterilight UV water treatment system, for those times when all you can find is stream water to fill your fresh water tank.

Larin tailgate lift, cause I am getting old and use it to lift stuff in and out of 5th wheel storage areas.

Windows in the top of the slide out..wait those were already there.
  • In no particular order, here are the 10 I like best:
    Added rear view camera.
    Converted to LED lights.
Built a battery slide out tray.
Put bathroom lights and fan on switches, reachable while sitting.
    Added electronic sparker to stove.
Replaced old shower head with Oxygenics.
    Added voltmeters and ammeter.
    Replaced Magnetek converter with PD9260.
    Added Tornado black tank flusher.
