OK, so I finally got this thing hooked up. I initially got the T fitting for the trans line, but I didn't have enough room to cut the line without disconnecting it from the tranny, and I decided against that (not wanting to introduce any possible leaks, either at the cut or the trans). Instead, I had my nephew (a machinist) fabricate a block (similar to one I saw on another website) out of aluminum that simply clamps tightly over the line, relying on metal-to-metal heat transfer.

It fits tightly onto the steel line (from the trans to the cooler), and I filled the hole for the sending unit with dielectric grease to help with heat transfer:

Added some flexible wire loom to protect the wiring near the engine/trans, and finally, I wrapped it with insulation to reduce any heat loss from wind:

So far, in testing, the gauge reads about 5-10 degrees less than the temperature of the steel line itself (per an infared temp gun). I'll monitor/check it during the next few trips to satisfy myself that the difference is consistent. :C
Edit: Hmmm...the pics have been removed from my post for some reason. Guess I'll try links instead.
