Actually I would say that your original idea may be the best solution short of purchasing a longer arm. I don't know if you need a 2x6 - a 1x6 may do the trick, kind of depends on how heavy the tv is. Also, if you can find a way to lock it back against the wall while travelling that will help with the force on the board.
