Utility trailer mod for toys

This doesn't really fall into a modification to an RV or TT but it involves bringing toys on a trailer. There is a poster here with a double stack trailer but my boat is a bit smaller.

We pull our motorcycle on a utility trailer behind the Class C. We recently purchase a tandem kayak modified for fishing. I didn't want to try and put in on top of the RV nor did I want to put in in the RV during travel. It is 12' long so it wouldn't fit on the trailer without hanging off the back and I don't want to remove the ramp for the motorcycle. Plus I want things balanced on the trailer.

I looked for trailer racks for kayaks. I found this one but they don't make it for 6' wide trailers nor did I want to spend $300 on bars and clamps.

This weekend, I made this for around 120-130 using galvanized 1" pipe and superstrut clamps (no drilling). Now I need to figure out how to lift 110 lb kayak 6.5' in the air. My wife is to small and "dainty" to help.

  • Slide PVC pipe over the steel to act as a roller. Lift one end onto the rear of trailer and then push forward.
  • I think you need some angle bracing, it looks like it will collapse the first time you have a hard stop
  • I'm thinking rollers on the top rail. Then you only have to lift one end at a time. Or I could give you the phone number of my 6' tall ex. :o

  • Look up Eide or 4 boys boat loaders for ideas. I had a Eide manual winch on a suburban and I could load a 16' aluminum boat on the roof by myself. A couple pulleys and hand winch you could probable build one yourself pretty cheap.
