I've been looking trading up my trailer to a fifth wheel that can be towed with my f150 5.0 v8 ton w/ short bed (5.5) I've looked at cougars and open range. three questions: can they really be towed safely? are there any other models that will work? and finally the keystone dealer told me I needed a special sliding hitch that would cost $3500! is this right? thanks for any responses.

1. The smallest Couger and Open Range I saw on their websites are a 12000 and 14000 GVWR which may equate to a 2400 or 2800 lb hitch weight. Way too much even for a F150 HD to tow safely.

2. There are other brands/models out here that will work safely....however it depends on your trucks GVWR gear ratio and max tow or the HD package and other pertinent truck tow specs.

3. Yes its possible a sliding hitch is needed however I sure wouldn't pay 3500 dollars for any hitch. IMO the 3500 dollars was probably included purchase price/installation and prep costs which is still too high for my use.

You didn't give us much of your F150 tow specs and which F150 package you have for us to go on which leads to lots of speculation.
