If you are planning to take this on long family trips then,,,
IMO, first things to do to a used TH is to know where you're starting out from. Must check running gear and safety devices,,,
All tires, drums, bearings, link pins, disassembled, cleaned, inspected, replaced(if needed), repacked, and adjusted CORRECTLY.
Think about it, start out on the right foot here. A little inexpensive maintenance now, could give you good as new towing reliability and performance of your used TH.
It could of just been serviced by a great mechanic, or like many I've seen, never been serviced since new.
Worst case is, you find everything is in great condition just serviced, and all that is needed is reassemble it with some new seals and grease...
Now you know what you are starting with, and can set up a regular maintenance schedule.
Don't forget to check all safety devices like CO, propane, smoke alarms. I also like to pressure test the propane system and adjust the regulator for peak appliance performance.
JFYI, my TH fully loaded ready to dry camp is probably 13,000-15,000gvw.
I can lock up the trailer brakes at will with the brake controller. Usually when taking my TH out of the storage for a trip, I get on a straight flat paved section and going just 3-4 mph slowly apply the trailer brake controller to see how the brakes are doing. A slow steady brake controller squeeze will quickly stop the rig without any truck brakes. A firm quick squeeze will lock em up...
Imo, don't take what a salesman/previous owner told you as complete truth about the maintenance condition of the running gear, check it yourself.
