Could be low on charge due to a leak. The refrigerant cools the compressor/motor and if there's not enough it doesn't cool just a couple of ounces is enough. When the compressor gets hot there's an overload inside the compressor called a Klixon that opens up and shuts it down. I've had to fix two leaks in mine and weigh in a new charge both times after evacuating it. Don't just assume its toast and replace it, have it looked at, might be repairable for less than replacement.
Also check the condenser (outdoor) coil for dirt and/or bent fins, I've seen quite a few with severely bent fins from abuse or hauling **** on the roof. Bent fins won't allow sufficient air flow when its hot, resulting in same shut down.
