First, there is only two of us, second, a full load of gas is already accounted for, it's not part of the "Payload". Like I said, I have over 2100 lbs of payload left for tongue weight/pin weight.
How are the newer 1/2 ton trucks rated higher than my 2007 3/4 diesel? My max pin weight rating is right near 2100 lb. I have looked at the springs and diffs, axles etc on newer trucks and they are no where near as beefy as mine. So how the higher ratings?
How is the Rating higher? - you burned up payload on that diesel engine. The curb weight of my vehicle is substantially less then yours. Even the gas version of your vehicle gives you several hundred lbs more payload. - mooky_stinksExplorerIt’s funny how everyone talks weights and ratings and then you give them and they move the goal line. It just goes back to the outdated “a 1/2 ton can’t tow that”.

Exactly, for some reason they think I need to add 900 lbs of payload for me and my wife to go camping.

Have you weighed your rear axle separately, to know how much pin wt can be added? Should be a lot more than 2100 lbs. I'm thinking you have around 3K lbs available, before going over your RAWR.

Curb weight is less but the axles, diff, springs, frame are puny in comparison. All that aside, I prefer live axles over independent suspension when towing. Handles far better but that's just me. As for payload, again, that is typically split between axles. What is the rating for the rear axle alone? - mooky_stinksExplorer

My truck is very similar to wing zealot’s and mine has a RAWR of 4800lbs and a scaled weight of 2560lb on the rear axle with me(230lbs) and a slider hitch and a full 36 gallon fuel tank. So that leaves 2240 available on the rear axle. BUT at the full rawr of 4800 and the front axle weight of 3300. It would put me over my GVWR of 7850. So to be within the ratings I could still carry 2000lbs of pin weight, be at my GVWR and under my RAWR. - wing_zealotExplorerThe RAWR is on the sticker of which I provided a picture of way back on page 1. There's enough information on that sticker that you could determine the piston diameter of the left front caliper if you wanted to (2.13 inches, each, of two). The fact remains, "I can easily tow a 8000 lbs fifth wheel with my half ton", which for some reason you seem all bent out of shape about. (Most people would just read the sticker and say, oh!, ok, maybe it could)
Get over it, the old saw of a "half ton can't _____" is now out the window. Ratings have changed over time just like they have for 3/4 ton and 1 ton.
A half ton is fully capable of towing up to 100% of its ratings as long as it doesn't exceed any rating - regardless of what the badge on the side says. Its time to start talking about ratings, not what the badge on the side says. - mileshuffExplorer

Asking a question is bent out of shape? Sheesh!! Tow whatever you want and have fun!! - philhExplorer II

4 passengers at 150 lbf each is 600. 30 gallons of gas is 180. Add cargo and you're easily topping 900. If it's just 2 people then sure, it's less! As for payload that is split between both axles. Whats the max pin rating for the bed?
full gas is in the cars base curb weight - mileshuffExplorer

True but UVW does not. Depends on what figures are used.
