2006 Dodge 2500 mega cab

We were looking to maybe get a new truck and ran into the mega cab. Loved the room and space since we have a daughter and 2 big dogs. My main concern is with the little teeny weeny bed and the payload. I was told payload is really low because the truck is heavy since it has the bigger cab. I know it would need a slider hitch but what do you all know about the payload and towing a 5er with it? Thanks

  • Before I bought my Silverado in 2010, I looked at a Mega-Cab that had a bed only 5'-8" long. Also, almost no payload.
  • That "teeny weeny " bed is still 6-1/2 feet long. But to answer your real question, yes, payload is way down on them. Unless your looking at a mega cab dually forget fifth wheels
  • Diesel or gas? I tow 11000 lbs, no concerns. Mine is Diesel, has the exhaust brake which is very nice in the Mountains. I had to have a slider.
  • Most of the 2500 mega cabs had really low payloads. Highest payload shown on Chrysler specs at time was 2,040 for SLT. Add in options and most mega cabs were under 2,000 lbs. Great trucks but limited payload. Depends on the fiver you want to pull.
  • What does your door sticker give you for GVWR and payload capacity? My recollection is that the early MegaCabs (even the 3500 DRWs) were limited on payload capacity because of their higher curb weights and their GVWR ratings.
