Just got back form a short 320 mile RT camping trip. I pull a 9000lb 28' 5'er with a 12 Ram 2500 CTD. No way would I want to tow it with a 1/2 ton. My pin is 1800lbs. Not much for 3/4 -1 ton trucks, but a bunch for the average 1/2 ton. Am I overkill? Maybe a little. But towing in Oregon and particularly the Cascade Mtn range, having a 3/4 ton truck makes life easy. I could easily get by with a gasser but only in a 3/4 ton+ truck. Handling and braking are far superior with the big trucks. JMO but the guys that say they tow 8-9000lb 5'ers with a 1/2 ton and feel its great aren't towing in the mtns with steep grades and tight corners. It's one thing to tow that weight with a 1/2 ton over a few rolling hills or on the flats, but put those trucks in a tight situation and the easiness is gone quickly.
