2014 Dodge 3500 5 th hitch

Ok I now have a truck, 2014 Dodge 3500 4 door diesel 6.5 box, and we are looking at used fifth wheels. I have limited search time because I'm using my phone data. So far I thinking about going with the Dodge factory frame mount kit and the Pullrite 4439 frame and either 2700 or 2900 hitch. Some tell me I wont need a slider but others say its best to have it. I would appreciate any suggestions or ideas on this or a better set up. Money is an issue but I dont want to do it so cheaply that I waste money and have to buy again. I'm looking at a Nuwa 30 foot and should end up at about 12,500 gross
Is air ride needed?
Is an air ride or rubber pin box needed?

Thank You

  • For Ram I would go with the B&W turnover ball and companion hitch. I don't have it yet, but I have seen it in use, very nice system and the bed is completely free when you remove the companion...
  • I have a Pull-Rite slider, but if I were to get another one today, I would have to look at the Demco Autoslide!
I am NOT saying that I would just run out and buy one, but would certainly read up on them before I decided on which one to get.
With the Pull-Rite you need an adapter plate for your pin box. Originally they had to have holes drilled in the pin box, with some having to be tap'ed. They now have a plate that locks over the pin, with two bolts holding the front of the plate, and works much easier. I had to be towed numerous times back when I had a 2003 F-350 6.0! Was a nuisance trying to pull the bolts and removing the plate..
Reading about the Demco in the May, 2014 Trailer Life, they have adjustable guides built into the hitch, so you do not have to modify your pin box in any way.
Sounds like a 100% improvement in the method of making the slide work to me!
    Just my 2 sense..
  • Slider or not depends a lot on the 5er, and how careful you are. If the 5er has squared off front lower corners you may well be advised to get a slider. But if it has rounded off contoured lower front corners you may not.
A good friend had a 5er with square front corners and short bed and knocked out his rear window on a tight back in. Later traded it for a newer 5er with contoured lower front corners and had no more problems. Although part of that was probably him being a little more careful.

An air ride pin box is not necessary. BUT. It does dampen the shock between the truck and trailer and makes for an overall smoother tow.
