I don't know if the valves are a different type than you had before.
One thing I'd look at is what maintenance the valve manufacturer recommends. My guess is the replacement was probably installed correctly, but the original might not have been lubricated correctly.
The only thing I can add to the method is I usually cycle my valves a few times after the drain completes. I'm not sure how much it helps, but it makes me feel like I'm spreading some of the lubricant and get a better seal.
