I live in Canada so snow is part of my life. I did fine for many years with a FWD car. I have since owned AWD cars and SUVs and a 4x4 pickup. With the pickup being rear wheel drive and all the weight in front it is really impractical on snow and ice. Otherwise gravel roads and rain 2x4 is just fine.
You only need 4x4 is you are going to encounter snow or slippery mud.
