For us it's a necessity as we often camp off the beaten path and require 4WD to be able to get into some of these isolated spots. If you primarily camp in designated campgrounds and RV parks more than likely 4WD will not be needed, although it's a nice feature to have if a situation arises that calls for it's implementation.
