I don't do much off-roading but I have owned 2 4WD trucks. From my experience here in Canada, where we get a deceint amount of snow, is that 4WD gets you going quicker than you ought to.
People in 4WD's can get a false sense of security and end up in the ditch just as often as someone with 2wd.
My new 2wd truck will be getting a full set of winter tires in the fall. The 4WD's, not the case. I didn't "need" them, except when stopping or turning.
